In the heart of the “Model Prayer,” Jesus teaches us to utter words that are far more than a petition—they are a surrender. “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10, NASB).
For many, these words are a familiar cadence repeated in Sunday services. But for the believer seeking the depth of Christ, this verse is a roadmap for the Spirit’s move on the earth today. It is a call to step out of human tradition and into the divine reality of the Kingdom.
The Will of God vs. Human Thought
One of the greatest obstacles to the Kingdom is our own “good ideas.” We often interpret “God’s will” through the lens of human logic, cultural norms, or religious tradition. However, the Bible teaches that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts.
-
Romans 12:2:
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
To truly pray “Thy will be done,” we must subject ourselves to His will in a pure way. This isn’t about what a person says or how a leader interprets a text; it is about the Spirit moving within the saints. When we stop trying to “figure God out” with our intellect and start listening to the indwelling Spirit, we begin to touch the actual will of the Father.
The Kingdom as the Body of Christ
The Kingdom of God is not an abstract concept or a future-only event; it is a present reality expressed through the Body of Christ. God’s will is for His saints to be His living expression on the earth—undivided, pure, and functioning as one.
-
Ephesians 1:22–23
And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
The “earth” where His will is to be done starts with the “earth” of our own hearts and extends to the corporate life of the Church. When we lay down our divisions and live in the unity of the Spirit, the Kingdom becomes visible. A divided body cannot fully express a sovereign King. True salvation leads us into this corporate life where we bear fruit together.
Light, Love, and Righteousness
How do we know if we are truly in His will? It isn’t found in religious busyness, but in the shining of His light. As we repent—continually turning our hearts back to Him—His light shines in our spirits, exposing human ego and replacing it with love and righteousness.
-
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
This light doesn’t just show us our faults; it empowers us to live out the life of Christ. This is the “move of God” on the earth: a people who are so filled with the life of Jesus that they express His love naturally. This is the fruit that remains—a life of growth that prepares the way for His return.
Preparing for the Return of the Lord
Every time we subject our will to His, we are participating in the “move” of God toward the end of the age. The coming of the Kingdom is tied to the maturity of the saints. As we grow in life and function as His Body, we are literally echoing the prayer: Thy Kingdom Come.
-
2 Peter 3:11–12
Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God…”
We “hasten” His return by being a people who are governed by His will today. This is not about being “religious”; it is about being available. It is about saying, “Lord, I don’t want my interpretation or my way. I want Your life to flow through me and Your Body.”
A Prayer of Subjecting
If you desire to see God’s will done in your life and on the earth, let your prayer be one of inward opening:
“Lord Jesus, I repent of my own understanding and my own ways of serving You. Shine Your light into my spirit. Let Your will be done in me as it is in Heaven. Build me together with Your saints as one Body, undivided and pure. Let Your love and righteousness be my fruit, and use my life for Your move on the earth until You return. Amen.”
By seeking His will purely, we move past the surface of religion and into the glorious reality of His Life. This is the path of the overcomer—those who live for the Kingdom today.
